In collaboration with: Internal Medicine Turkish Society Profile: National influenza centres (NICs) are institutions responsible for the laboratory surveillance of influenza and are formally recognized as such by WHO. Such an acknowledgement requires prior designation by national ministries of health. The process of recognition as a NIC is described below. A NIC recognized by WHO will maintain direct working relations with the WHO Global Influenza Programme and the WHO collaborating centres for reference and research on influenza, and will comply with terms of reference for NICs. Globally, 122 NICs in 94 countries participate in the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN). In the European Region, there are 51 NICs in 40 countries.
