Gabriel Sanfélix-Gimeno, PharmD - Head of Health Services Research & Pharmacoepidemiology Unit

  • PharmD (University of Valencia, 2002), MSc in Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics (Pompeu Fabra University, 2008) PhD (University of Miguel Hernández de Elche, 2009). Postdoctoral research stay at Harvard School of Public Health (Epidemiology Department) and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School (Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics) between 2011 and 2012 (awarded with the ASISA-HARVARD fellowship for excellence in Clinical Research).
     
  • Among other appointments, he is head of the Health Services Research & Pharmacoepidemiology Unit of FISABIO-Public Health (former CSISP), former Scientific Director of FISABIO-Public Health, coordinator of the Spanish National Group of Drug Utilization Research, the national representative of Spain in EuroDURG, and member of Executive Committee of EuroDURG.
     
  • His research is focused on the generation of evidence on routine clinical practice using electronic health records. Mainly regarding the assessment of healthcare quality for the identification of care gaps, drug utilization (use, appropriateness and adherence), comparative effectiveness and safety of medications for chronic conditions such as heart disease, musculoskeletal and mental disorders. His research also deals with the evaluation of policy and clinical interventions. Recently, Dr Sanfélix has also been working on the development, together with other members of his team, of studies on drug safety assessment during pregnancy using a large cohort of over 600.000 pregnant women.
     

 

Isabel Hurtado Navarro, PhD - Statistical analysis & Data management coordinator

  • Doctor in Public Health, University of Miguel Hernandez (2008); Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences Research Methodology in Valencian School of Health Studies.
     
  • She has experience in analyzing and monitoring cohort studies, having worked for eight years on projects related to HIV infection. From 2010 she is a postdoctoral researcher of the Health Services Research Unit at FISABIO, and from 2015 she is head of the Health Services Research Network node in Chronic Diseases (REDISSEC) of the Valencian Community, now Research Network on Chronicity, Primary Care and Prevention and Health Promotion (RICAPPS) of the Carlos III Institute. Her research activity has focused on lines of chronicity, drugs and healthcare utilization appropriateness, evaluation of the effectiveness, safety and efficiency of drugs, adherence to treatment, health technologies, health outcome and drug-epidemiology.
     
  • Main functions at the HSRP Unit are the coordination of the Statistical analysis and Data management line in chronic diseases and leading mental health research line of the Unit. It has been researcher in several national and international projects as principal investigator and co-investigator and she has participated in national and international research networks and working groups relevant to the pharmacoepidemiology research line. Finally, she has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, has collaborated in some final master's projects and is currently directing two doctoral theses.

 

Clara Rodríguez Bernal, PhD - Perinatal and pediatric pharmacoepidemiology research coordinator

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (National University of Colombia), Master of Public Health and PhD in Public Health (Miguel Hernández University). Former visiting researcher at the Slone Epidemiology Center.
     
  • Her research work focuses mainly on pharmacoepidemiology studies, specifically on the evaluation of the use of medications, adherence to treatments and their adequacy, as well as the analysis of the effectiveness and safety in large population cohorts, through the combined use of different databases to evaluate these aspects in normal clinical practice conditions (real- world evidence), with a special emphasis in cardiovascular drugs/conditions.
     
  • Dr. Rodríguez-Bernal has also extensive knowledge and experience in the study of pregnancy cohorts and birth/child outcomes. She leads the emerging perinatal and pediatric pharmacoepidemiology research line and actively participates in and currently coordinates the cardiovascular pharmacoepidemiology research line within the HSRP Unit at FISABIO.

 

Aníbal García Sempere, PhD - Manager, Chronic Care and Real World Evidence

  • Doctor in Biomedicine and Pharmacy, University of Valencia; Master in Health Economics and Healthcare Management, Pompeu Fabra University; Graduate in Business Administration and Management, University of Valencia.
     
  • He has worked in many pharmaceutical companies in different positions as well as in public organizations for health technology assessment and pharmaceutical care management. In 2015 he joined the Health Services Research Unit (HSRP Unit) at FISABIO, and is a member of the Valencian Community node of the former Network for Research in Health Services in Chronic Diseases (REDISSEC), now Research Network on Chronicity, Primary Care and Prevention and Health Promotion (RICAPPS) of the Carlos III Institute. 
     
  • Main functions at the HSRP Unit are the coordination of the pharmacoepidemiology research line in chronic diseases of the Unit, leading and participating in key areas of execution of the different projects under development; to establish collaboration networks with entities of the productive sector, medical and pharmaceutical industries, international consulting, etc. to position the HSRu as a preferred partner within the private biopharmaceutical sector at a national and international level in real-world evidence projects in chronic diseases; to obtain funding to ensure the development and sustainability of the line over time (public and private funding, competitive and non-competitive); or to participate in national and international research networks and working groups relevant to the line. Finally, he has directed 15 final master's projects and is currently directing a doctoral thesis.

 

Francisco Sánchez Sáez, PhD - Biostatistics & Health Informatics Manager

  • Industrial Engineer (2010), MSc in Industrial Safety and Environment (2011), PhD in Industrial Engineering and Production (2017) and MSc in Biostatistics (2019). beneficiary of a Research Staff Training Grant (FPI) (2013-2017). Accredited as Assistant Professor Doctor (2018) by ANECA (Agency National Quality Assessment and Accreditation).  
  • He has worked in different Research centers: MEDASEGI group of the Polytechnical University of Valencia (UPV) (2011-2018), Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico de Valencia (INCLIVA) (2018-2019); and, currently, at the Health Service Research Unit of the Foundation for the Promotion of Health Research and Biomedical Medicine of the Valencian Community (FISABIO) (2020-Present). In addition, he has participated in international collaborations, as the “University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)” (2019-2020) through a research contract, or developing the content of the subject "Multivariate Techniques and Machine Learning" for Computational Mathematics Master Degree at Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR).
     
  • At HSRP Unit, he works as much in the management of databases as well as in the methodological development of different projects research, coordinating the biostatistics and health informatics area. Finally, he is university professor in the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR), where he teaches the subject "sensors, devices, networks and communication protocols" and directs several End of Studies Projects of the Master Degrees of Industry 4.0, and Internet of Things.

 

Salvador Peiró, MD, PhD - Board Certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health

  • Salvador Peiró, MD (1979), PhD (1996), Board Certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health.
    After having developed various positions in the INSALUD and the Valencia Health Service, in 1991 joined to the Valencia School for Health Studies (EVES) being responsible of the Health Service Research (HSR) Unit. In 2009 joined to the former Centre for Public Health Research (CSISP, actually FISABIO), continuing today. He is associated researcher of the Centre for Research in Economy and Health (CRES) of the Pompeu Fabra University (CRES-UPF, Barcelona). During 2015-2017 was Deputy General Director of Research and Innovation in Health at the Valencia Government Health Department.

     
  • His research interests at the HSRP Unit, focus on Medical Practice Variations in chronic diseases, overuse, low-value care, inappropriate use of health services, pharmacoepidemiology (primarily using real world data retrospective cohorts for causal inference purposes), pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research.
     
  • Salvador Peiró has extensive experience in the design and development of clinical trials, intervention studies and observational studies using Real World Data. He has also experience in qualitative methods and in economic evaluation.

 

Celia Robles Cabaniñas - Biostatistics & Health Informatics Manager

  • She has worked in the University of Valencia (2021) as a statistical researcher, participating in different clinical trials developed in the Faculty of Physiotherapy. In 2021 she joined the Health Services Research & Pharmacoepidemiology Unit (HSRP Unit), and now is a member of Research Network on Chronicity, Primary Care and Prevention and Health Promotion (RICAPPS) of the Carlos III Institute.
  • At the HSRP Unit, she works as a data manager and statistical researcher of different projects related to public health. Finally, in 2022 she started her PhD in Statistics and Optimization in the Faculty of Mathematics (University of Valencia).
Fran Llopis Cardona - Mathematics

  • He started his PhD in Statistics and Optimization (University of Valencia) in 2020 and joined the HSRP Unit as a beneficiary of a Predoctoral contract for training in research into health (PFIS) of the Carlos III Institute. He is a member of the Research Network on Chronicity, Primary Care and Prevention and Health Promotion (RICAPPS) of the Carlos III Institute, and a member of the Biostatistics National Network (BIOSTATNET).
     
  • At the HSRP Unit, he works as a statistical researcher and data manager. His work focuses on developing statistical methodologies with a main application in public health research.
